Kathryn & John

Welcome to Kathryn and John's Website

My name is Kathryn Hazelton.

I have lived in Flagstaff since 1959, when my family moved here from California where my father attended graduate school. He was hired as an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, while my mother later became a teacher at Flagstaff High School. My husband and I have been married 21 years and we have one daughter, 16, attending Coconino High School. I love to draw and paint and my daughter shares that love. She is also quite a good writer and is very involved in journalism at school, publishing articles regularly.

I have been a first grade teacher for nine years at the Lura Kinsey Community School here in Flagstaff. My Bachelor degree was in Graphic Arts, Design emphasis, in 1981 at Northern Arizona University. Later, in 1989, I completed post degree certification for elementary education. After I began teaching first grade at Kinsey, I was privileged to be trained in a reading recovery method known as C.L.I.P. (Collaborative Literacy Intervention Program). I finished my Master in Early Childhood Education in 2000, and then soon after, an endorsement in English as a Second Language.

Although I have come into teaching late in life, it has become my joy, my passion. I consider myself a "specialist" in early learning and delight in bringing the world of reading and writing to my young students. I use themes in science, social studies, and math to build a strong foundation of literacy in the classroom. Maintaining close relations with my parents is a priority. I have found that an open door policy goes a long way in the success of each student and I welcome parents to participate in any way they can.

My School I am very involved with the K-2 reading program at Kinsey, Success For All. Some of the attributes of this program are:

bulletAbility grouping first through second grade.
bulletConsistency among teachers.
bulletRegular assessments.
bulletFlexible grouping according to student needs.
bulletDaily 90-minute reading blocks.
bulletStrong parent component/nightly reading.
